But this will be in our kitchen, not my shack, so my wife will listen to it and see it and the more she likes it the better. I'm a little leery of settling on the HomePatrol II for it's ease of use and loosing performance and/or features. I'm tech-savy and can do any setup myself. I don't spend a lot of time on my radio hobby right now so I don't want to be constantly tinkering HOWEVER, I don't mind a little bit of setup. The ease of use for the HomePatrol II is enticing.
Our local 911 uses Project 25 Phase II, plus I want something as "future proof" as I can get. I've been wanting to upgrade to a scanner that will support the latest digital technologies for years, but the steep price tags kept me away (recently, I got a gift card from a retailer that would allow me to get one of these for a reasonable out-of-pocket price). I have an older analog scanner in my kitchen right now that I just use for our local 2m repeater. I've been a ham for most of those year, though I'm a bit inactive right now (kids, grad school, etc.). I've been in the radio hobby for over 15 years. I'd appreciate any insight and recommendations!

If there are others I should consider, I'm open to suggestions, but I'm hoping to focus on these two. These updates include the HomePatrol Ultimate Update (for HomePatrol 1 and 2 scanners) as well as the ProVoice and DMR/TRBO updates for the BCD436HP, BCD536HP, BCD996P2 and BCD325P2 scanners. I'm considering the Uniden BCD996P2 or the HomePatrol II.
